How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

If your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light comes on, it’s easy to find an air pump around Pittsburgh to return you to proper inflation. However, there are instances where your TPMS light is on after a fill-up. Your TPMS is an essential safety system and you should ensure it’s working properly. Thankfully, learning how to reset your tire pressure light is simple. If you run into any problems, be sure to contact the Stuckey Automotive service center.

Simple Step to Reset a Tire Pressure Light

It’s important to only reset your tire pressure light after you’ve properly inflated your tires. Typically, the system light turns off by itself, but if you have a TPMS light on, follow these tips:

  • You can try to turn the sensor off by driving at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes. This can reset the sensor the next time you turn the vehicle on.
  • Keep the vehicle off, but turn the key to the “On” position. Hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times, then release it. Start your car and your sensor should reset after 20 minutes. Note: Locate the TPMS reset button underneath the steering wheel. If you can’t locate it, check the owner’s manual.
  • Try inflating all tires 3 PSI over the recommended amount and then deflate them completely. Include the spare tire as it may have a sensor as well. Then, inflate the tires to the recommended pressure again.
  • Turn the vehicle off and disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery terminal with a wrench. To discharge any stored energy in the vehicle, turn the car on and honk the horn for three seconds. Reconnect the battery to see if the TPMS light is still on.

If you’ve followed these steps for how to reset a tire pressure light and the light remains on, schedule a service appointment at our service center near Harrisburg and Chambersburg.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

When the tire pressure light is flashing, it actually hints at a few issues. A flashing tire pressure light could mean that one of the sensors is missing or damaged, or it can be a sign that the batter needs to be replaced. You’ll want to visit a service center to have our technicians diagnose the issue.
