What is All-Wheel Drive?

“All-wheel drive”, or AWD for short, is a drivetrain configuration in which torque is directed from the engine to the front and rear axles to all four wheels via differentials. There are various types of AWD systems, including full-time and part-time AWD. Full-time AWD systems send torque to the front and rear axles all the time. On the other hand, part-time AWD systems monitor Chambersburg road conditions and your driving behavior to determine when it best makes sense to direct torque primarily to the front axle. You’ll commonly see AWD systems on vehicles with unibody frames, such as the Ford Maverick.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

So, what is the difference between AWD and 4WD? “Four-wheel drive”, or 4WD for short, is a traditional 4×4 drivetrain. 4WD systems are able to direct power to the front and rear axles, as well as send a specific amount of power between the left and right wheels. Typically, 4WD systems are designed for maximum off-road performance and are usually built into vehicles with truck-based platforms, like the Ford F-150.

Is AWD the Same as 4WD?

No, AWD systems are not the same as 4WD systems. These drivetrains offer different benefits for different drivers. All-wheel drive vehicles usually prove to be the best option for most suburban drivers looking for additional traction in bad weather or inclement weather conditions. Contrastingly, four-wheel drive vehicles prove a superior choice for those seeking the most rugged off-roading conditions or pragmatic truck performance for a Huntingdon construction site.
